Mary Rosemblum

My writing career began before I could actually write. I never could stand being bored, so when dragged along on interminable shopping trips by my mother – an activity whose appeal I never could quite fathom, even as an adult – I entertained myself by making up stories about imaginary creatures in the fascinating universe that existed at the five-year-old eye level of Kauffman’s and Gimbel’s department stores. You had these great shadowy spaces tucked between racks of clothes and lurking behind mannequins, obviously overflowing with magic. Those mannequins themselves watched me with sardonic amusement, knowing that the grownups would never believe me if I told them that they were alive. You had interesting portals to other universes in the dressing room mirrors and strange girls peeped back at me, inviting me to step through while my mother was deciding between the blue and the green blouse. I never stopped finding stories in the dusty corners and busy landscapes of the world around me. I went from making up stories in my head to writing them down and, in 1988, I was accepted into the Clarion West Writers Workshop. I sold my first short story there, have gone on to publish dozens of short stories in major markets as well as eight novels with New York publishers as well as overseas, win awards, and come full circle to become an instructor at Clarion West.

I love writing and about fifteen years ago, I found that I loved sharing that passion with aspiring new writers. I love teaching nearly as much as I love the writing. I’ve taught privately, at workshops, and for Long Ridge Writers Group, an online and by-mail school with excellent courses. I love seeing a new writer’s words take flight, and watching that person’s confidence soar as the stories start to really work. When the publishing world began to change and online and ebook sales opened the door wide to the self-publishing ‘indie’ author, The New Writers Interface was born. I had been shepherding my writing students through the publishing and promotion process, trying to protect them from the many scams that abound. I could do this as a business! And so I have. I love this sea change in publishing. It offers so much possibility, so many great new stories to share, and such potential to those passionate new writers. I have spent my life living my passions and I never plan to stop. Sometimes it is not easy. If I can offer a hand to others who want to live their passions rather than taking that safe path, I’ll sure do it.
