Joel Friedlander's The Book Designer blog is worth keeping a close eye on if you are considering publishing your own work. Not only is he the Book Design Nazi (I mean this in a good way, Joel, what author has a clue about how important good page design is?) but he posts a lot of very useful information on publishing in general More...

The Amazon.com Afiliate? Worth It?

May 23rd, 2013 • Posted by Mary Rosenblum • Permalink

Whew, I’m back on the blog. What an unconscionable absence! If one of my promotional clients did this I’d be scolding her even as we speak! Blame The Book for my absence! What book? The one I’ve been working on non-stop for the past few months: The Viral Path, a Handbook for Publishing Success Today. It’ll be out in September in paper and as an ebook More...

Thanks for the shout out, Mary! It's a good point that earning a little money on the side can help keep one motivated to continue blogging. I earned my first 93 cents from Amazon in 2001 or so (from the sale of a history book), and ended up making a career of content writing, at least until I switched to the author thing. ;)

Good for you for writing, Anon! And yeah, money really is a motivator isn't it? Even if it's 93 cents!

Pricing packages for The New Writer Interface

I offer several service packages here, all designed to take you through the publishing and promotion process. Once you become my client, that book is my project, too. You’re always welcome to come back and ask questions, get advice, and stay in touch, even after we’re finished with the publishing process. I want to know how your book is doing. I’m not just offering a service and temporary support, I’m offering a relationship!

Submission Package

Submission

Submission Package

If you have a completed draft that you’re happy with, this is what you need. My basic submission package includes Submission Editing –-- this means I polish your prose without making major content changes -- in electronic or paper format.

I will give you a complete report on the strengths and weaknesses of the book, including prose, story structure, and characterization.

I will give you an objective market evaluation. What genre or sub-genre does this book fit, and what type of publisher is likely to be interested in it? Or will it do better as a self-published book or ebook, and why?

I’ll offer you at least 3 publisher or agent recommendations, and I’ll provide support through the submission process. If you’re not sure what a letter means or you don’t know if you need a publishing attorney or not for that contract, don’t worry, I’ll help you. And if you choose to self-publish, I’ll recommend honest print publishers who do a good job and guide you through the process, and offer you information on ebook uploads and distribution, book cover options, and the like.

I’ll provide you with self-promotion information about what you need to do in order to reach readers, how best to design or revamp your website, and I’ll teach you how to use that blog or social media effectively.

Price for All this$899.00

Content Package

Extensive Content Editing

If you’re bogged down, if you know it’s a good book, if you simply need some help to make that book as effective and compelling as it can be, if your prose is weak and you know it, this editing and publishing package is for you. It’s particularly helpful if you’re writing a personal memoir, when it’s easy to be ‘too close’ to your material to see weaknesses. I’ll read the manuscript and give you a detailed initial evaluation of marketability, structure, characterization, and prose. I’ll tell you what will work for readers and what may not, and what needs to be done to make that book compelling to readers in a particular market. We’ll decide together on any major changes to the story that might be needed. Then I’ll return the annotated draft to you for any changes that you choose to make.

When you’re happy with your changes, I will edit your revised draft for submission.

You’ll receive a market evaluation and at least 3 publisher or agent recommendations for the revised book, and support through submission process, the same services I offer with the basic Submission Package, including help building your self-promotional platform.

Price for All this$1499.00

A la carte Package

A la Carte

Do you need some help with a short story, blog posts, synopses or query letters, a nonfiction article? I’m happy to work on short form as well as long form. You can pay by the word and it’s as much teaching as editing, so you’ll improve your craft!

A la Carte Chapter and Short Form Editing

If you are working on a first draft or memoir and simply need help getting that first draft finished, I will work with you on a chapter by chapter basis. I also work with short fiction and short personal narratives. I’ll edit the chapter for submission and provide a report on its strength and weaknesses as part of the book as a whole. For short fiction and narratives, I edit for submission and provide a detailed report on its reader-connection and marketability.

Up to 2500 Words$40.00
Up to 5000 Words$75.00
Each Additional 1000 Words$10.00

Promotional Support

If your book is already published, but you aren’t getting sales, this is for you. If the book is still in progress, but you want to have a readership waiting for its release, this is a way to build that fan base early. Throwing a Facebook page up there is not going to automatically generate thousands of sales. You need to reach readers who do not know who you are. I’ll help you understand how you go about that. You’ll learn how to make your website more compelling, brand yourself, blog effectively, and how to reach out to readers who don’t know you exist and will probably like your book. We’ll set up a promotional platform that suits you; one that you can manage comfortably. I’ll monitor and critique your blog posts, Facebook, Twitter, and newsletter material as you learn to use these tools effectively.

Unlimited Promo Support (per month)$250.00

Chapter by Chapter Option

Chapter by Chapter

Are you just starting out with a new novel or memoir, or are you bogged down in the middle and not sure where to go? I’m a writing teacher as well as editor, and I’m happy to work with authors on the first draft, on a chapter by chapter basis. You send me one or several chapters at a time and I’ll edit them, show you how to improve your prose, and comment on the characterization and ongoing plot structure. You get a stronger first draft and you improve your craft skills.
